Home safety advice for Dementia Action Week

Posted by Charlotte Salter, on May 20, 2026.

Dementia Action Week is a good time to remember that home safety can look different when you’re caring for someone with dementia.

UKCPI’s Stay Safe awareness programme encourages carers to store cleaning products out of reach and sight, to help keep homes safe for people with dementia.

People with dementia can be at increased risk of injury or accidental harm in the home. Taking the following precautions helps to create a safer home environment and ensures that household cleaning products are used safely and stored securely.

  • Do store cleaning products out of reach and out of sight, in a secure cupboard
  • Do store cleaning products in their original containers and close the lid after use
  • Do store cleaning products separately from food and drink, and not in the kitchen
  • Do purchase products that cannot be mistaken for food or drink

We are grateful to Age UK, Alzheimer’s Society and Dementia UK for working together with us on this ongoing awareness programme.
