Education

Hooray for Handwashing

Children love to eat with their hands - but have they washed them first? Hooray for Handwashing is a handwashing and cleanliness programme for infant groups. It has been designed for 4-7 year olds as a fun and easy way to teach children good health habits. The programme comprises background information on health and hygiene, a story, posters and poems for children. It is used as part of the Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship curriculum within schools.

The UKCPI has received numerous compliments on the excellence of the material from those schools who have already received copies. If you would like to receive a copy of the pack, please contact the UKCPI office at Tattenhall.

Educational CD Rom

An important aspect of the UKCPI's activities is to promote a better understanding of the science behind the industry's products through high quality educational material. As an industry we feel it is important that children learn about the science of products around them, and that we have a responsibility to provide a key to that knowledge.

As part of our commitment to education, the UKCPI has produced a CD ROM-based programme entitled Learning to Investigate, designed to enhance the National Curriculum and the KS3 Science Strategy. It will teach children in the 10-14 age range not only basic science skills through the modern medium of a 'virtual laboratory' but also investigative and IT skills. The programme has been based upon the written resource 'Clean Science' published by the Chemical Industry Education Centre at the University of York.

Schools, and other relevant bodies, wishing to obtain copies should contact the UKCPI office in Tattenhall for further information.

Barton Broads

The aim of the Clearwater 2000 project at Barton Broad is to restore the broad to a healthy and attractive state, to benefit wildlife and increase public enjoyment. Barton, the second largest broad, is nationally valued as a nature reserve, a water recreation area and as a monument to the ancient art of peat digging.

The project is designed to rid the broad of the plant nutrients phosphate and nitrate in order to restore clear water. Decades of 'nutrient-enrichment' have led to the growth of algae, loss of water plants and a decline in the wildlife interest of the broad. This makes the broad appear murky and lifeless, while the build up on the bottom has made boating more difficult.

The range of work is being undertaken at Barton to encourage the return of nationally important wildlife such as the otter and bittern. The whole of the broad is being suction-dredged to remove the nutrient rich mud and the reed swamp fringe around the edge of the broad will be restored. Work is also being carried out to restore Pleasure Hill Island, which has almost completely eroded.

At the southern end of Barton Broad, Turkey Broad will have its clear water restored by a special technique called 'bio-manipulation'. This technique will remove the fish from the broad, allowing microscopic animals to flourish, which in turn will encourage the re-growth of plants.

Plans are also in place to help people learn about and enjoy the broad; including an information point at Barton Turf, rowing boat and canoe hire, a walkway to viewing points, an electric boat trip and a freshwater ecology centre at How Hill.

The Barton Broad project has received £200,000 in sponsorship from the Soap and Detergent Industry Environmental Trust (SADIE Trust). Since 1983 SDIA has contributed over £100,000 towards research projects and water quality restoration experiments. The trust got involved with the Broads when detergents were blamed for the excess nutrients in the water and continued with their support although it was established that the main problem was with agricultural practices and human sewage.

The project is also Millennium Commission funded, with a £1.15 million grant.

Washright

The 'Washright' campaign gives useful hints for consumers on how they can help the environment when doing the washing. The 'Washright' leaflet produced in conjunction with Going for Green and the UK Government's 'are you doing your bit' campaign can be downloaded.

Washright is part of a major initiative by the detergent Industry in the UK and Europe. Its aim is both to encourage all manufacturers to continue to reduce the environmental impact of their products and to help consumers understand the role they can play too.

Through UKCPI the UK Industry has funded television and press advertising, door to door leaflets as well as an information panel on detergent packs.

Sustainable Cleaning - A Guide for Users of Professional Cleaning Products

In 2004 the European Commission published a handbook to give guidance to the Public Sector on procuring 'green' products and services.  This general guidance is not specific to any one sector and forms one part of the Commission's 'Green Public Procurement' (GPP) initiative.  In 2006 the initial leaflet 'Guidance for Responsible Public Procurement of Cleaning Products' was produced.  Subsequently, the leaflet has been revised and refined which is now entitled 'Sustainable Cleaning - A Guide for Users of Professional Cleaning Products' .

Meeting Natural Expectations

The ‘Meeting Natural Expectations’  discussion paper aims are to de-mystify the facts about 'natural' ingredients versus 'chemicals' used in washing and cleaning products.  It has been published to redress the balance of understanding and to open the debate between the Industry and society about ways to improve sustainability throughout the whole cleaning process.
