How UKCPI Works for Its Members

A Council of up to 20 annually elected members governs the UKCPI. The UKCPI Council is responsible for establishing policy and strategic direction, as well as a sound financial basis for the association.

The majority of UKCPI's work is carried out by Committees staffed by member companies and the secretariat.

These Committees and task forces cover a wide range of subjects working through two key steering committees covering Technical and External Affairs. Expert Groups and Task Forces are set up as necessary by the Committees to handle specific areas such as biocidal products, microbiology, legal issues and packaging waste. There is a separate group for members supplying industrial and institutional products.

Communication with all members and organisation of the UKCPI is handled by the small secretariat consisting of Director General, Technical Manager and Personal Assistant. This communication includes direct individual contact, Regional Meetings, an email Fast Information Service, Members Extranet and regular Information Bulletins.

Links are maintained with other trade associations such as CTPA (The Cosmetics, Toiletries and Perfumery Association), BACS (British Association for Chemical Specialities), BAMA (British Aerosol Manufacturers Association), and GOSIP (part of the Chemical Industries Association).

The UKCPI is one of the largest members of the European Association (AISE) which represents the Industry at European level. The Association plays an increasingly active role in its European Association, being represented on many of its committees.

Additionally UKCPI is represented on a large range of external bodies, including:

  • Confederation of British Industry (CBI)
  • British Standards Institution Committees (BSI)
  • Industry Council for Packaging and the Environment (INCPEN)
  • Alliance of Industry Associations (AIA)

External Affairs

UKCPI is active in promoting the reputation of the Industry, by informing the media, consumer and environmental organisations, MPs, local authorities and schools what the Industry is doing and has done - for health, hygiene and in reducing its impact on the environment.

A range of leaflets and facts sheets are available (see 'Publications').

The All Party Parliamentary Group, chaired by Ben Chapman MP, maintains contact on key issues between UKCPI and interested Members of Parliament.

UKCPI has distributed educational material to pre-school and infant schools in the UK and has classroom sets available. The latest initiative 'Hooray for Handwashing' is a major campaign to encourage four and five year olds to wash their hands and has been widely requested by playgroups and primary schools.

UKCPI has also produced a CD-ROM for schools entitled 'Learning to Investigate' aimed at basic science and IT education in a unique 'virtual laboratory' designed for Key Stage of the National Curriculum. As the name suggests, it encourages children to learn sound investigative techniques combined with basic science education and IT skills.
